I got up to the apartment gate and reached into my pocket to find the gate key. A Korean lady was standing on the other side of the gate and near her, a little Korean girl, presumably her grand-daughter judging by the age differential. I took out my keys to unlock the gate, but before I could wrestle them out of my pocket, the little girl opened the flippin gate for me, and said in the most amiable of tones, there you go! I said thank you with a smile and began ascending the stairs. After no more than two steps, she said, good night and waved with a darling smile on her face. I was moved to semi-tears (I tend not to cry, for whatever reason) as I had just witnessed what I felt to be the most sincere, veritable kindness Ive witnessed in quite a long time. I thought it was beautiful and I felt like sharing.
Also, after playing a bit of Metal Gear Solid 4, I began thinking about MGS2 and Raiden and how a lot of people seemed to hate him merely because he was the playable hero and Solid Snake wasnt. I remember thinking to myself that Raiden wasn't all that bad and seeing the legendary Snake through the eyes of a rookie who was trying to live up to be like Solid Snake was the entire point. Ive played through MGS 1-3, and still feel MGS2 to be the most successful. By successful, I refer to the games ability to leave me feeling satisfied.
If youre interested, this guy has some really excellent insight on what I feel MGS2 is all about.

"It's like there's a game show in my head and I'm ALWAYS WRONG!"

I live on the edge of an extremely poor, dilapidated area of the city, and run across some really sad and strange situations sometimes as I'm going along my way. The other day, I walked past a homeless man who was dragging around a cart used to collect boxes and bundled paper goods to take to a recycling center. That's...kind of how it's done around here...The best a lot of these poor guys can do before they're eventually found dead in the street is to rent a cart from one of these places, and go around from store front to store front, asking for boxes to break down and take back to the recycling center. Since the center is kind of a hike away from where I found this particular man, I knew he'd been busting his ass hustling for boxes, and his cart was overflowing. Because he had so many boxes, they started falling out of his cart as he went along. As I passed him, I noticed a few that had fallen and picked them up to hand to the man. I know it's not that much, but I was hoping that perhaps even just a small gesture of kindness would help that guy have enough energy to make it back to the recycle center to collect what pittance he'll be able to get from it. I know how powerful such small things can be, and that's why I did it. It's been hotter than hell's most popular steambath around here, and I knew he had to be tired...
Anyway, not to pat myself on the back - my intention was just to let you know that I am really aware of how much even a small act of kindness can impact a person through the course of a day....a lifetime, even. I'm really glad that happened, and even happier that you mentioned it! BTW, I still need to respond to you...I'm sorry I haven't yet. Things are pretty crazy around here....I wish you had a LiveJournal account, I could definitely let you in on exactly what's going on around here from day to day...On the other hand, I'll note you with my Photobucket account if you like, to see some of the pics I've been uploading! ^_^

I'd have to say MGS3 was my fav. It got me because of the complex relationship between Naked Snake and The Boss. Also there was the big reveal about her at the end that locked me in, not to mention the beautiful final battle you have with her. And MGS3 help make a lot of things form the other games make sense, for example why the beauty and the beast core have the names and attitudes they have and it was when Ocelot was a kool.
On another note I was wondering if you were still up for that collab we've been talking about since forever.

"Stay away from the chicken! Bad Chicken...MESS YOU UP!"
I get so sick and tired of faux kindness. A lot of times, I feel that people show kindness for totally selfish reasons. I guess it's similar to donating money to a charity and making the act as visible/public as possible. No doubt that the donation is helping, but I question the true intentions of the alleged philanthropist. I guess it's easier to recognize kindness in children because they tend to be horrible liars, as weird as that sounds. I mean, you see people smile all the time, and you just know that it's an act or a thing done simply for propriety's sake. It's like if they had their way, they'd step and shit all over you. But with kids, everything they do seems to be genuine. If they feel displeasure, they'll let you know. That's why her kindness felt so real.
Anyway, I'm glad that there are people like you who understand how important kindness is. It seems like most people are so predisposed to doing whatever is necessary to make themselves feel good. I mean, you could just as well have NOT helped the poor man and rationalized to yourself that helping him might have implied that you pitied his situation. But sometimes I think it's important to just go ahead and remind people that kindness -the real kind- still exists. Anyway, thanks for the comment Jill and I hope all is well.
